Coaching students and athletes is an absolute pleasure. Why? Because they completely understand the coaching model, embrace it, and feel empowered by the work they are doing.
When working with youth, they recognize that as their coach, I support, encourage and guide them. The forward motion happens when they themselves realize the power within and begin to be accountable to themselves.
Typically a student reaches out for coaching with organization and time management struggles. As their coach we work together and they allow me great insight into how they see their world. I support them in coming up with their own strategies and together we put an action plan in place. We meet weekly to determine how effective that strategy was, and what area might need reinforcing.
Students quickly learn life long skills that apply to the classroom, the playing field, their social life and eventually into their working world.
Sessions with students typically last 20 - 25 minutes and I require that we meet weekly for a month. Some students will continue working with me for the added support.
Tele-coaching seems to be a style that works for youth and their busy lifestyles. In addition, the process of working with a coach over the telephone allows them to open up and provides a sense of anonymity. This helps get to the heart of the issue quickly.
For students or athletes the benefits of working with a coach include:
Assisting in establishing clear, concrete, measurable goals.
Moving steadily towards your goal with easy bite size pieces.
Develope the tools, strategies and habits to achieve current and future goals.
Why it works:
The coaching relationship is built on mutual trust.
Together we create a firm foundation to flourish.
I encourage, hold accountable and provide support and positive reinforcement while guiding the student to do these things for themselves.
We create a high degree of focus that results in positive change.
Together we set up systems for success.
Students learn to improve communication skills and quickly see the benefits.
I listen on different levels, hearing both what is said and what is not said.
Our work together makes change empowering.
The student/athlete gains confidence and embraces organization.
